Carl Pei, one of the founders of Nothing Phone, has said that AI agents, instead of mobile apps, will now transform digital life.

In the world of the Internet, it was once said that ‘web surfing’ would be replaced by mobile apps. However, times have changed. Now it is being speculated that apps will be replaced by Artificial Intelligence (AI). According to technology experts, a big change is coming in the way we use smartphones. Users will be freed from the hassle of having to open separate apps for different tasks and AI will do all those tasks in an integrated manner.
Carl Pei, the creator and CEO of the famous ‘Nothing’ phone, has compared the current state of smartphones to the Palm Pilot and PDAs of 2005. The Palm Pilot and PDAs are digital tools used about two decades ago. He says the smartphone sector has been very slow or ‘boring’ for the past 20 years. According to Pei, apps are certain to disappear in the future and this will force technology founders to think in a new way.
At the South by Southwest event held in Texas, USA, Pei gave an example and said, ‘If you want to have coffee with a friend now, you have to open four apps: a messaging app, maps, Uber and a calendar. It is becoming very difficult to do anything on the phone.’ He envisioned the smartphone of the future, saying that it will deeply understand the user and fulfill every need. According to Pei, AI will initially execute commands such as booking flights or hotels. He says that this is a very simple task or ‘very boring’. However, AI will gradually become more powerful and will understand the user’s plans and guide them as an assistant. ‘When the system starts to know us better than we know ourselves, it will do things that we need without us realizing it,’ he says.
Pei’s analysis is that in the future, a separate interface will be needed for AI agents. According to him, in the next few years, our relationship with technology will completely change and it will move from manual use to ‘proactive’ use. In this way, technology will be able to understand human needs in advance.
It is estimated that the number of mobile apps worldwide has reached about 9 million. The earliest mobile app is considered to be the Snake game. This game was available on Nokia phones. This app was included in mobiles in 1997.
