Cybercrime on the rise, more than 9,000 complaints in a year

The Cyber Bureau of Nepal Police has stated that more than 9,000 cybercrime complaints have been registered in the current fiscal year. The bureau believes that cybercrime incidents are increasing across the country.

At a program organized in Kathmandu, the bureau's Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Gajendra Acharya said that cyber risks have also increased with the increasing use of the internet, digital payments, social media and online communication. According to DSP Acharya, women are more likely to be victims of cyber crimes. He said that cyber crimes can have serious impacts such as financial loss, mental stress, reputation damage and data theft. Phishing, deepfakes, doxxing, social media hacking, online fraud and digital payment scams were mentioned as major cyber crimes in the program. To avoid such risks, the Cyber Bureau has urged people to use strong passwords, adopt two-factor authentication, not open suspicious links and keep personal information safe.
