Nepal's future depends on how competent it is in AI: Professor Pokharel

Professor Manish Pokharel, Dean of the School of Engineering at Kathmandu University, has said that Nepal's information technology sector will expand depending on how competent we are in AI.

At the AI Conclave recently organized by the university's AI Club, Pokharel pointed out that the country needs to be good at AI technology for its progress.

A few years ago, he recalled that although he had suggested to the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Information Technology, Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) and other bodies to establish an 'AI Center of Excellence' in Nepal, he did not get much response at that time.

'We had suggested to the government to establish centers of excellence a few years ago with the conclusion that the future of our country would depend on how competent we are in AI,' he said. 'Everyone only praised the idea as good, but it did not work.'

He then informed that the university itself had established an AI and DPI center. ‘I remember, it was like flying a plane whose condition we did not know,’ he said, ‘The runway was not suitable, we did not know how the plane would fly, but we had faith in the competence of all our crew members.’ He said that it was with that faith that he decided to fly the ‘AI plane.’ Looking at the students who organized the three-day AI Conclave, Prof. Pokharel expressed his satisfaction to see the plane safely reach the pilot’s hands today. He said that he was very happy with the grand program organized by the students. According to him, now the destination of AI will be decided by the students.’
