The statement said that TikTok is establishing itself as a powerful ‘video-first’ search engine, not just for entertainment. The company said that users are increasingly seeking information from TikTok videos, whether it’s for exam preparation, travel planning, breaking news or learning new skills.

The company said that searches for topics such as education, food, travel, beauty and lifestyle, as well as ‘how to’ videos, have increased significantly in Nepal in the last one year. According to Umais Naveed, Head of Content Operations for TikTok South Asia, Nepali users are using TikTok search as a natural starting point to understand how something works or get inspiration from real people. Similarly, searches related to hashtags like ‘learn on TikTok’, ‘travel talk’, and ‘food talk’ are also growing rapidly in the TikTok community in Nepal, the statement said. As the scope of

searches increases, TikTok has strengthened features such as ‘search intervention’ to protect users. This includes a ‘search guide’ that appears when searching for sexual abuse, and it is reported that it will direct users to local helplines and the ‘sexual abuse support’ page within the TikTok ‘safety center’ through an in-app banner.

In addition, TikTok has also implemented interventions related to floods and natural disasters. TikTok said that during the monsoon, disaster-related search interventions were activated to ensure that users receive timely official information.

'TikTok's search feature is based on the concept of safety by design,' said Asma Anjum, Regional Trust and Safety Lead, TikTok South Asia, 'Search interventions provide users with well-being, factual and socially responsible guidance when seeking help or searching for sensitive topics.'
