Preparations are underway to bring the Tamang language to Google Translate by this February.

Amrit Yonjan Tamang, coordinator of the Tamang translation team, informed that efforts are being made to bring it to the Google Translate system by next Falgun. Yonjan said that 50,000 Tamang words have already been entered on the website tmt.ilprl.ku.edu.np prepared by the technical team of Kathmandu University, out of a target of one lakh sentences.

Organizing a press conference at the Tamang Studies Institute in Boudha, Kathmandu on Thursday, coordinator Yonjan said, 'Initiatives will be taken to enter the Tamang language into the Google Translate service by next Falgun.'

The system has been opened to receive feedback and suggestions at the community level throughout the month of January. There are four translation models for correct translation and you can even edit and give suggestions, said Indra Tamang, a member of the translation team. 'If the Tamang translation is not considered suitable, arrangements have been made for your feedback and suggestions,' Tamang said.

After the community level feedback, a model will be trained and the translation team is preparing to reach some Tamang-speaking rural municipalities for further improvement and get more feedback.

Preparations to bring Tamang language to Google Translate by Falgun

The initial inauguration of the 'Google Trilingual Machine Translation Project' for Google Research was held on Poush 11. This project is active for inter-translation between Tamang-Nepali-English languages. The translation was started after a collaboration agreement was signed on 2082 Shrawan 4 between Prof. Dr. Balkrishna Bal, Department of Information and Language Processing, Computer Science and Engineering, Kathmandu University for the technical side and Yonjan, President of Tamang National Library (Tarapu) for the Tamang translation side.

The preparation of the trilingual mission translation model is being done by Prof. Dr. Bal, Dr. Prakash Paudyal, Rupakraj Ghimire and Bipeshraj Subedi of Kathmandu University, Prabin Acharya of Dublin City University and Prof. Dr. Balaram Prasai, while the translation team includes coordinator Yonjan, Indra Tamang, and translators Pema Tshering Tamang, Buddha Yonjan Lama, Udaya Thing, Yakina Agadh, and Binuka Lama.

If the Tamang language, spoken by more than 1.4 million people in Nepal, is included in the Google Translate service, the Tamang language will be available on the world language platform. So far, in addition to the Nepali language, only two mother tongues, Maithili (2022) and Newa (2024), have been included in Google. With the entry of the Tamang language into Google, it is stated that users living anywhere in the world will be able to (1) Tamang-Nepali (2) Nepali-Taman (3) Tamang-English (4) English-Tamang inter-translation.

The coordination team says that Google Translate will support daily life and tourism as well as education, communication, and government work, and that in the future, its services may be expanded to include translation services, search, voice search, YouTube subtitles, etc.
