Stating that telecommunication services have been established as a human right, Ncell Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Michael Foley has said that such services in Nepal are not in line with global standards.

He mentioned that 5G is a distant topic in Nepal when operators are unable to provide even basic 4G services.

When Minister for Communications and Information Technology Jagdish Kharel visited the Ncell office in Nakkhu on Monday, CEO Foley said that Nepal's current telecommunications service is below international standards. He admitted that even though 94 percent of users in Nepal have already purchased 4G handsets, they as service providers have not been able to provide even real 4G services, let alone 5G.

CEO Foley said that advanced telecommunications infrastructure is necessary to make Nepal's economy competitive, provide opportunities to the youth and bring businesses here. He said that such infrastructure is needed not only in big cities but also in rural areas. Pointing out that continuous and large investment in the telecommunications sector is required for this, he clarified that service providers need assurance that 'there is a future' in Nepal.

Welcoming Minister Kharel at the event, Ncell Chairman Satish Lal Acharya and CEO Foley informed about the losses suffered by the company during the Gen-G movement. During the Gen-G protest on Bhadra 24, Ncell's central office in Lainchaur was vandalized, looted, and set on fire. Since then, the company has been operating services from its office in Nakkhu.

After the on-site inspection, Minister Kharel said that he had come to understand the details of the losses suffered by Ncell. He also mentioned that he was happy to know that Ncell is preparing to introduce a new 'pack' targeting Gen-G.
