Scientists have identified five stages of human brain development, in the most comprehensive study yet of the changes in our neural wiring from infancy to old age, according to a report in the British media outlet The Guardian.
Published on Nature.com The study scanned the brains of nearly 4,000 people between the ages of one and 90. The study revealed five broad stages. They are divided into four major turning points. Where the brain enters a different state.
It showed that the state of the brain changes at the ages of 9, 32, 66 and 83. According to which the period from birth to 9 years is considered as infancy to childhood. The period from 9 to 32 years is considered as the second period.
Only after this the neural wiring of the human brain goes into the adult mode. Which lasts the longest, i.e. from 32 to 66 years. Only at the age of 66 does the human brain begin to age. And, it starts to age at the age of 83. Scientists studied this using 12 methods. From infancy to childhood, our brains go through a process of ‘network consolidation’. Babies have many synapses (connections between neurons) in their brains, but only the most used synapses survive. During this period, the brain’s wiring is somewhat less efficient. During this time, the brain’s gray and white matter grow rapidly. This thins the outer layer of the brain and stabilizes the surface folds.
In the second phase, white matter grows. This makes the brain’s communication network more organized. During this time, brain connections become more efficient and this improves thinking and learning.
“We’re not saying that people in their late 20s are behaving like teenagers or that they have teenage brains,” said Alexa Moseley, who led the study. “It’s actually a change in pattern.”
She said the study could help reduce the risk of mental health problems. Such problems often appear in the second stage.
The most powerful transformation in a person’s brain occurs around the age of 32. Parenthood also causes such changes. However, this has yet to be studied in detail. “We know that a mother’s brain starts to change after giving birth,” said Moseley, “and it’s conceivable that there might be a connection between these milestones and that it could affect the brain.”
The study showed that brain development remains stable after the age of 32 compared to the previous two stages. Other studies have suggested that intelligence and personality also develop during this time. Similarly, different parts of the brain will become more distinct and specialized.
Brain connectivity will begin to decline after age 66. It will decline further after age 83. It is said that this situation may occur as we age and the white matter in the brain decreases.
