Prime Minister Modi on Tuesday unveiled a locally manufactured semiconductor chip 'Vikram 3201'. The chip was unveiled at the opening ceremony of the 'Semicon India 2025' conference held in New Delhi. This chip is made by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) and Semiconductor Laboratory in Chandigarh.

India claims that the Vikram 3201 with a 32-bit microprocessor has been built to withstand harsh conditions, including those used in space travel. This chip is manufactured in 180 nm SIMUS technology. It can manage large amounts of memory and execute complex commands, Indian media reported.

The first batch of this chip, suitable for satellites and space missions, has already been tested during a space mission and its reliability has been confirmed, it was informed on the occasion. Generally, advanced semiconductors are manufactured at high cost with complex techniques, costing thousands of US dollars. But Vikram's price has not been disclosed.

India's Minister of Information Technology Ashwini Vaishna handed over the chip to the Prime Minister and called it "a symbol of India's technological renaissance". He informed that five new semiconductor units are under construction and 10 big projects costing more than 16 trillion Indian rupees have been approved in 6 states. Vaishnav said, "Only a few years ago, we had a new beginning with the visionary vision of the Prime Minister". Today, the world looks at India with confidence.'

The release of Vikram 3201 is considered an important achievement towards India's 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' vision. It aims to reduce dependence on imports amid persistent supply chain disruptions in the global chip market. Modi emphasized its strategic importance by calling semiconductors the 'digital diamond of the 21st century'. He said, "The day is not far when the semiconductor technology that is designed and manufactured in India but the world will believe in it will be manufactured". Since 2021, 18 billion US dollars have been invested in 10 projects related to the semiconductor sector. There is also a plan to start a Critical Minerals Mission to ensure the rare minerals required for chip production.

The trade war between the US and China and the banning of each other have caused one problem after another in the semiconductor market. Its price has also increased . India has set an ambitious goal of capturing a significant share of the world's $10 trillion semiconductor market by 2030. Currently, India's own domestic demand is 45 to 50 billion US dollars .  Other news related to
