The Russian Embassy in Nepal has stated that its official Telegram channel is operational. However, the Nepal Telecommunication Authority has decided to close the Telegram platform in the country, so there may be some problems in accessing the channel, the embassy said.
The authority issued a notification on July 2 and instructed the internet service provider to immediately block the application as the number of online frauds through the Telegram app is increasing and involvement in serious crimes such as money laundering is seen. The next day, on July 3, the embassy also announced that their channel is continuously operating.
The embassy has also mentioned that alternative means will be used to continue information exchange . "We are using our website and other social networks like VK, Facebook and Instagram to maintain a stable communication facility and update information," said a statement issued by the embassy.
In the context of increasing concerns about online security, it is mentioned in the embassy's notification that Nepal has closed down another social media platform, Tik Tok, some time ago.
The embassy has promised to be informed if there are any changes related to Telegram access in the coming days. It has also given information that the embassy can be contacted through VK, Instagram and website. The popular VKontakte (VK) app in Russia is a social networking platform similar to Facebook. Its founder is Durov Pavel, the CEO of Telegram.
