The Ministry of Information and Communication Technology has warned that all social media platforms operating in Nepal but not listed or registered will be gradually deactivated. In the notification issued by the Ministry on Sunday, it is mentioned that those who do not list/register according to the guidelines for regulating the use of social media, 2080, will be deactivated in Nepal.

"All the social networks that are not listed/registered will be deactivated gradually in Nepal and if they are listed, they will be reactivated from the same moment," said the notification. Even though the Ministry has repeatedly requested the platforms to be listed, the operators of the platforms that have significant users in Nepal such as Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, WhatsApp, X, and LinkedIn have been continuously ignoring them. Regarding the listing of

, the ministry is aware that no one will be inconvenienced, considering the interests of both social media platform operators and users. "The Government of Nepal, the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology expects social media users to use social media uninterruptedly and social media platform operators to operate their respective platforms in accordance with the procedures prescribed by the guidelines," the notification said.

In order to manage the use of social networks and to promote self-regulation of social network platform operators and users, the government issued the Guidelines for Managing the Use of Social Networks, 2080 in accordance with section 79 of the Electronic Transactions Act, 2063. The directive was published in the Nepal Gazette on 11th November 2080 and came into effect.

According to the same guidelines, on 15th of November 2080, the Ministry of Communication requested the individuals, companies or organizations who want to operate a social network platform to list their social network platform in the ministry within three months. In addition, it was also requested to arrange a contact point, an officer to hear residential complaints and an officer to monitor self-regulation compliance within Nepal. In this regard, the ministry of

had issued a notice requesting the platform operators to follow the guidelines through their own website to ensure the implementation of the decision of the Council of Ministers dated 6th August 2081 and on 25th August. "On October 22, 2024, the chief operating officers of some large social media platforms were addressed to the Ministry of listing and the implementation of the directory, as well as a correspondence was made through email for the implementation of the decision of the Government of Nepal," the notice said, "to ensure the compliance of the same directory, a notice was published in Gorkhapatra Rashtriya and The Rising Nepal on January 21, 2081, and a call for listing was made for the last time on March 7, 2081 The notice was published again after giving a period of 30 days.'

The ministry has made so many requests and efforts, so far the major social network platform operators have not been listed. Last time, on April 4, the representatives of the American company "Meta" discussed with the Ministry of Communication via virtual means and said that they would respond soon on this issue, but they have not yet taken any initiative. The ministry has informed that only three platforms namely Tiktok, Viber and Bitok have been listed in Nepal so far.
