You must have said thank you to ChatGPT when you got an immediate answer to your question or got a job done quickly. However, the head of ChatPT, Sam Altman, has asked users not to write 'thank you' and not to say 'please' before giving a command.
Altman, CEO of artificial intelligence company OpenAI, said that when communicating with AI tools like ChatGPT, there is no need to keep referring to expressions of gratitude such as 'thank you' and 'please'. He says that such words are very expensive for the company.
After a user on the social network platform "X" raised the question of how much the company has paid in electricity consumption due to such polite words used when communicating with ChatGPT, Altman responded that it would cost more than tens of millions of dollars. Based on the
Large Language Model, chatbots like ChatGPT use enormous computational power to understand and answer user questions. Thousands of graphics processing units (GPUs) are placed in the data center to operate the chatbot and since they consume a lot of electricity, the energy required to process one word written in the chatbot is having an environmental impact.
The New York Post reports that AI consumes about 0.14 kilowatt-hours of energy to generate a simple answer . This energy is enough to light 14 LED bulbs for an hour. A chatbot consumes a lot of energy as it has billions of conversations every day. Globally, datacenters account for 2 percent of total electricity consumption and experts have pointed out that this percentage will increase as the use of technology increases.
Some AI experts say that since AI tools are not creatures that understand human emotions, it doesn't matter how they are spoken to. Therefore, they are of the opinion that polite style is not necessary when communicating with tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, Dipsik, Copilot and it will increase energy consumption. But, according to Curtis Beavers, director of Microsoft's Copilot design group, a polite inquiry elicits a more helpful and professional response from the AI. "If AI feels humble, it is more likely to respond in kind," he said.
