The services of billionaire Elon Musk's company Starlink have been confirmed to be available in India. For this, on Tuesday, the two largest telecommunication service providers there, Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio, have signed an agreement with Musk's SpaceX.
Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio have announced their partnership with SpaceX just a month after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Musk met in Washington. In the meeting, Modi and Musk discussed strengthening cooperation in space, communication, technology and innovation.
Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio are now set to offer Starlink satellite-based broadband internet services to their customers. Interestingly, Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Jio and Sunil Mittal's Bharti Airtel had earlier strongly opposed SpaceX's entry into India.
According to NDTV, Ambani and Mittal took the presence of Starlink as a challenge saying that there is no 'equal competitive environment' in India. But now both these service providers have become partners of SpaceX.
"Airtel and SpaceX will explore suitable opportunities to provide Starlink equipment in Airtel's retail stores, to provide Starlink services to customers through Airtel," Airtel said in a statement on its website, "Options will be explored to deliver this communication service to communities, schools and health centers in remote areas of India". He has given an enthusiastic response about the 'transformational effect' that Starlink can bring to consumers.
