Training girls from sexual minorities and Muslim communities in astronomy

Girls from the hearing impaired, LGBTIQ and Muslim communities have been trained in astronomy.

Nepal Astronomical Society has provided a two-day training on astronomy in Kathmandu. On the first day Thursday, the girls were given practical and theoretical training on various aspects including what is astronomy, constellations and constellations. Similarly, information was given on how to use the Planisphere constellation map and how to observe the stars.

On the second day, training was given on telescope introduction, safety measures to be adopted while using telescope, how to use solar filter for safety and why to use solar eclipse glass or solar glass.  Manisha Dwa, the project coordinator of

society, said that the training was organized to increase interest in telescope use, science and technology among girls and to enable them to teach what they know in schools and communities. He also said that the aim of the program is to increase the involvement of women and underrepresented communities in astronomy. After taking the

training, the participating students expressed their happiness for getting practical knowledge. Raunak Khatun, studying at Kanya Mandir Secondary School, said that she had only read about telescopes and sundials in books, but she was happy that she got the opportunity to see and learn from the program.

Angela Sherpa of Life Vision Academy said that she learned a lot in the program and now she is confident that she can teach others.

Sujita Nepal of Central Deaf Mavi said that she participated in such programs for the first time and said that she was able to learn subjects that she did not read in books. She now informs other friends in her college about the telescope through sign language to share knowledge. A sign language teacher was arranged for the hearing impaired students . 

The President of Nepal Astronomical Society, Suresh Bhattarai, said that such programs are being conducted to increase the quality of education in Nepal and overcome the obstacles in the education sector. He said that the aim of his organization is to ensure that no student is deprived of the opportunity to learn. Students and teachers from different schools participated in the

program.

On the same occasion, the society gave 1/1 telescope to Central Deaf School, Life Vision Academy and Kanya Mandir Secondary School.
