As the day to decide whether or not to allow TikTok to run in America is approaching, users there have started downloading another Chinese app 'Rednote'. According to CNN, Red Note became the most downloaded app in the Apple App Store in the US on Tuesday.
After the signs of Tiktok being banned, users who are looking for a new platform are flocking to the Chinese app called 'Xiaohongshu'. They have started installing this app by giving it the English name 'Red Note'.
Although 'Xiaohongshu' means 'Little Red Book' i.e. the red book, it has no reference to the book containing the statements of the Chinese Communist leader Mao Zedong, the app makers said American users who prefer to call themselves 'TikTok refugees' are attracted to another Chinese app as an alternative to TikTok.
Founded in 2013, this app is one of China's largest social media platforms. It currently has 300 million monthly users. It is also called the Instagram of China.
Although the name of the app is in Chinese Hanji language, it has the facility to run in English version after opening it. This app, which was previously popular among young people in China, Taiwan and places where Mandarin is spoken, has now reached American users. This app looks like a combination of TikTok and Instagram.
According to the BBC, on Tuesday alone, there were about 63,000 posts under the title 'TikTok Refugee' in Rednote. Users are making posts about how to use this app, the meaning of the Chinese words there.
'Thank you to our Chinese host for providing us with hospitality,' the BBC wrote, quoting one user, 'but we apologize in advance for our rudeness.' She said that she did it.
The number of TikTok users in America is 170 million. However, the US government passed a law last April that could ban the app.
According to this law, TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, will have to either sell TikTok's American ownership to non-Chinese businessmen or face sanctions by January 19.
US lawmakers passed a bill on Tiktok ban with the suspicion that Tiktok collects the data of American users and gives it to the Chinese government. President Joe Biden immediately signed it into law.
ByteDance and TikTok users have been raising questions about the constitutionality of the law. They claim that banning the app violates the right to freedom of expression.
ByteDance has filed a lawsuit in the US Supreme Court with the aim of overturning the said law. The case filed by ByteDance on the accusation that the US government tried to violate freedom of expression by banning the app was last heard last Friday.
The judges were skeptical of ByteDance's main claim of free speech, leaning toward the US government's view. This also indicates the possibility of Tiktok ban in America after January 19.
While the case is pending in the court, some billionaires have started saying that they are ready to buy Tiktok. From the world's richest man, Elon Musk, to Shark Tank America's investor Kevin O'Leary, billionaire Frank McCourt, banker Steven Mnuchin, who is also the former finance minister, news has come out that they want to buy the American ownership of TikTok. Bytedance has responded that the sale of Tiktok is not possible.
