The campaign to destroy the enclave has slowed down again

What you should know

In the last week of June, Kamala Auji, who was sleeping in a shelter in Nigali, Krishnapur Municipality-1, died due to snakebite, the municipality immediately instructed all ward offices to demolish the shelter. It also warned that if the camp is not cleared within 15 days, action will be taken according to the law and a fine of 10,000 will be imposed. After the incident, the campaign to demolish the enclave was intensified, but now it has slowed down.

The compound in front of the deceased Kamala's house and the compound of her elder sister Asmita were demolished the day after the incident. After that, some nearby settlements were demolished. However, the campaign stopped there. Saraswati Malla of Krishnapur-1 Nigali said, "For a day or two, everyone was angry with the people's representative, but now everyone is silent. Two-four settlements were demolished, and then the local people did not accept it, and even the people's representatives stopped coming."

According to Hemraj Ojha, mayor of Krishnapur, 18 slums have been demolished in Nigali area till last week. "This work is not done all at once, it has to be done gradually by reminding everyone," he said. He said that now a team of people's representatives, non-governmental organizations and security personnel are collecting the data and the campaign will be started again after the data is received.

According to the warning given by the municipality, not all the slums have been demolished within 15 days, nor has anyone been punished. Last year, Krishnapur demolished 4 camps in Kumgada of Ward-1. However, after that, the campaign was halted due to the protests of the locals and violence against the team, Ward-1 chairman Mohan Basnet said. According to him, there are 126 slums in the ward and a committee has been formed under the coordination of executive committee member Ratna Bohra to demolish them.

32-year-old Kamala Auji Damai of Krishnapur Municipality-1 was bitten by a snake while sleeping in her camp on June 27. He died during treatment at Seti Provincial Hospital in Dhangadhi.
