Karan KC has completed 100 wickets in One Day International cricket in impressive fashion. After taking 2 wickets against Namibia in the Cricket World Cup League 2 in the Netherlands on Monday, Karan reached his 100-wicket milestone.
Karan was not limited to just 2 wickets against Namibia. After he took 5 wickets for 29 runs, Namibia, who batted first after losing the toss, managed to score only 211 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in the allotted 50 overs.
Karan had gone wicketless in the previous two matches against Namibia and the Netherlands, and coincidentally, Nepal had lost both games. However, taking 5 wickets for 29 runs is Karan's best bowling performance in One Day Internationals so far. This is the fourth time Karan has taken 5 wickets in an innings in ODI cricket.
Karan is the first Nepali fast bowler and the second Nepali player overall to reach the milestone of 100 wickets in ODI cricket. Spinner Sandeep Lamichhane has taken the most wickets for Nepal, with 154 wickets in 77 matches.
The 34-year-old Karan has reached 103 wickets in 72 matches. In the list of highest wicket-takers for Nepal in ODIs, Sompal Kami is third with 99 wickets in 74 matches, Lalit Rajbanshi is fourth with 55 wickets in 49 matches, and Dipendra Singh Airee is fifth with 54 wickets in 79 matches.
Nepal played its first ODI against the Netherlands in Amsterdam in 2018, and since then, Karan has been a regular member of the national team. In Nepal's very first ODI, he took the wicket of Scott Edwards, who is now the captain of the Netherlands. Karan first played for Nepal in the 2015 World Cricket League Division 2 Qualifier in Kenya, but at that time Nepal did not have ODI status.
Karan's previous best bowling performance was taking 5 wickets for 33 runs against the USA in Houston in 2022. Besides that, he has taken 5 wickets in two other ODI matches. On the same tour of the USA, he took 5 wickets for 38 runs against Oman, and in 2023, he took 5 wickets for 61 runs against Namibia.
He has taken 30 wickets in 21 ODIs played at Kirtipur. On foreign soil, he has taken 73 wickets, including 41 wickets in 26 matches at neutral venues. Karan has taken 19 wickets in the UAE, 15 in the USA, 12 in Zimbabwe, 9 in Scotland, and 8 in Oman. He has taken 58 wickets on Asian soil.
Karan has taken 112 wickets in 91 T20 Internationals. In T20Is, only he and Sandeep have taken 100 or more wickets for Nepal. Karan has taken those wickets at an economy rate of 7.76 and an average of 20.45 in T20Is. In ODIs, he has maintained an economy rate of 5.14 and an average of 27.14.
Karan has played some of the most memorable innings in Nepali cricket as a batsman in ODIs. In 2018, batting at number 10 in Windhoek, Namibia, he scored an unbeaten 42 runs off 31 balls to give Nepal a 1-wicket victory, which is considered one of the best innings in Nepali cricket. This was also a key reason Nepal advanced towards ODI status. Because of this innings played on February 14, Karan is also known as the 'Valentine Boy'.
Last year, batting at number 9 in Dundee, Scotland, he scored an unbeaten 65 runs off 41 balls, which helped Nepal win that match against Scotland by 1 wicket. Karan has scored 700 runs in ODIs at a strike rate of 91.02, and 495 runs in T20Is at a strike rate of over 151.
