Nepali chess player CM Purushottam Silwal secured fourth place at the 28th Asian Youth Blitz Chess Championship held in Shenzhen, China.
Purushottam’s result in the competition among Asia’s young players marks a significant achievement in Nepal’s chess history.
Organized by the Chinese Chess Association, the 3-minute 2-second blitz, held until July 24 under a 9-round Swiss system, saw participation from 32 Asian countries.
Nepal’s 2053-rated Purushottam entered the tournament as the 22nd seed. With an excellent performance, he scored 6.5 points to claim fourth place. He played at an average rating of 2345 and added 136.8 rating points to his personal tally.
According to the Nepal Chess Federation, in his first three games, he defeated China’s 1741-rated Chen Xinsuo, Russia’s 2349-rated FM Efimov Leonid, and Vietnam’s 2171-rated FM Dang An Minh, respectively.
In the fourth round, he lost to Kazakhstan’s 2155-rated FM Bolat Inayat, but in the fifth, he defeated Vietnam’s 2253-rated IM Banh Gia Huy.
In the sixth round, he drew with Vietnam’s 2351-rated IM Pham Tran Gia, then went on to defeat Hong Kong’s 2139-rated CM Kao Jamison Edrich in the seventh and China’s 2367-rated Che Jiachen in the eighth.
Missing out on the title, Purushottam lost to Vietnam’s FM Duong Vu An in the final round. In the last game, where he had a strong chance of winning gold, Vietnam’s FM Duong Vu An secured victory over him and claimed the title with 7.5 points.
Philippines’ IM Arca Christian Gian Carlo finished second with 7 points, while India’s FM Madhavendra Pratap Sharma also scored 7 points and took third place on tiebreak.
Despite the loss, CM Purushottam finished fourth on tiebreak with 6.5 points. Along with him, four other players also scored the same points and ranked up to seventh place.
