The legal hearing involving the medical team engaged in the treatment of the late football legend Diego Maradona is still ongoing. It has been just as tense and full of anger as Maradona’s own playing career, which was itself turbulent and full of ups and downs.
Maradona passed away in 2020. After his death, seven healthcare workers were accused of negligence. The legal proceedings began in April. He died of heart failure and acute pulmonary edema just two weeks after surgery.
The hearing for this case was supposed to conclude in August. However, even after statements from 70 witnesses and defendants and more than 25 hearings, there is still no end in sight to this legal drama, and its conclusion remains uncertain.
The defendants, who claim Maradona died of natural causes, have already spent months in court with Maradona’s daughter. As the legal process enters another month, it has become extremely dramatic. Maradona’s personal physician, Leopoldo Luque, is the main accused. Many consider him primarily responsible for Maradona’s death.
However, he has adopted a meticulous and cautious strategy in the legal proceedings. He has attended every hearing. Whenever any statement is linked against him, he strongly objects and presents his arguments. So far, this doctor has personally intervened and testified nine times. During these interventions, he has played audio recordings and presented scientific research papers.
At one point, he asked his own lawyer about technical procedures to show Maradona’s post-mortem video. During that process, Luque’s team showed the video in court. Maradona’s daughter left the courtroom in tears. The hearing then had to be postponed. The debates and disputes in court have forced the judge to take on the role of a referee.
After a particularly heated debate between the legal representatives, Judge Alberto Gaig said, “It’s not easy to stop lawyers, just like it’s not easy to stop children.” The debate between Fernando Burlando, the lawyer representing Maradona’s daughter, and Francisco Oneto, the defense lawyer, has also made the conclusion of this case uncertain. At one point, Burlando told his counterpart to go back to school and study.
In response, Oneto told him to withdraw all the accusations. Because of their argument, one hearing had to be postponed. Immediately afterward, they did not stop insulting each other in front of the media. Throughout this process, football fans and Maradona’s supporters have shown great interest and have been following the case closely.
