The Nepali men's kabaddi team is set to leave for Haryana, India on Thursday to prepare for the 20th Asian Games to be held in Japan.
The players selected for training are Ghanshyam Rokamagar, Anku Pun, Adit Chaudhary, Prakash Giri, Suraj Bohara, Sanskar Kumar, Ravi Tharu, Ashok Joshi, Sagar Yadav, Kumar Lama, Ganesh Parki, and Karun Rasaili. Ghanshyam, Anku, Ravi, and Karun are already training in India. Ghanshyam is in Haryana, while the remaining three players are in Himachal Pradesh. They will join the team from there.
The coach is Bishnudatta Bhatt, the assistant coach is Kalyan Bhujel, and the manager is Parshuram Oli. However, manager Oli will leave a few days later.
The players will train for one month at the Sandeep Narwal Academy in Haryana. After that, the team is scheduled to go to Thailand for further training, according to Arvind Kumar Jha, General Secretary of the All Nepal Kabaddi Association.
“Our team will only go to Thailand if Chinese Taipei also comes there. There, we will play practice matches among three nations including us. If Taipei does not go to Bangkok, we will continue our training in Jaipur and Uttar Pradesh in India. We will also play practice matches with various local teams in India,” said General Secretary Jha regarding the preparations.
The team will depart for Japan directly from the training venue to participate in the Asian Games, which will be held from September 19 to October 3. This will be the fifth participation of the Nepali men's kabaddi team in the Asian Games. Previously, the men's team participated in the Asian Games held in China in 1990, Japan in 1994, Thailand in 1998, and Indonesia in 2018.
The Nepali women's kabaddi team will also participate in the 20th Asian Games. This will be the second time the women's team is taking part. In the 19th Asian Games held in Hangzhou, China, the women's team made its debut and won a historic bronze medal. The team was bid farewell on Wednesday by National Sports Council Vice President Bishal Shrestha and Kabaddi Association President Tulsi Thapa.
