Nepali national men's football team coach Guglielmo Arena resigned on Wednesday. He said he was stepping down as Nepali national team coach amid the uncertainty created by the ban imposed on Nepal by the International Football Federation (FIFA).
Italian-born coach Arena wrote on social media, "With the ban imposed by FIFA, I cannot continue with the football development plan I was trying to implement in Nepal. I am very disappointed with the current situation. Nepali football has now reached a standstill."
He further said, "I am worried about the future of players at all levels of Nepali football." He also expressed regret for not being able to do enough work in Nepali football and expressed gratitude for the love and respect given to Nepal during his short stay.
Nepal has played only one match under Arena's leadership. Last March 26, Nepal faced Laos in the final match of the third round of the Asian Cup qualifiers. Nepal was defeated 1-0 in that match in Vientiane.
He had come to Nepal before FIFA imposed a ban on Nepal and tried to understand the preparations for the men's SAFF Championship to be held in Bangladesh. But after FIFA's ban, he returned to his country and has now stepped down as the coach of the Nepali team.
