Goals from Breil Embolo and Dan Ndoy helped Switzerland beat Algeria 2-0 on Friday to advance to the last 16 of the 2026 World Cup. It was the first time the Swiss team had won a World Cup knockout match since 1938.
Switzerland took the lead in the 10th minute in Vancouver, Canada, after a brilliant pass from Johan Manzambi. Ndoy added a second goal in the 46th minute. He scored 46 seconds into the second half.
It was also the first time Switzerland had scored more than one goal in a knockout match since 1954. The defeat ended Algeria's dream of winning their first knockout match and the team will now return home.
Switzerland will now face the winner of the match between Colombia or Ghana for a place in the quarter-finals.
