Ward 15 has dominated the Kathmandu Metropolitan Cup ward-level badminton competition by winning two titles.
Azarenka Sherchan became the champion in the women's singles final held at the NOC Earthquake Memorial Covered Hall in Kathmandu-15. The pair of Anish Tuladhar and Vidya Shrestha became the champions in the mixed doubles. The men's singles title was won by Babish Thapa of Ward 10.
In the men's singles final, Babish defeated Swayam Manandhar of Ward 15 in straight sets of 21-12, 21-9. Champion Babish won Rs 32,000 and runner-up Swayam won Rs 20,000.
In the women's singles final, Azarenka of Ward 15 defeated Shisita Kuinkel of Ward 6 21-11, 21-9. She received a prize of Rs 32,000. The runner-up received Rs 20,000.
In the mixed doubles final, the pair of Anish and Vidya defeated the pair of Saksham Dhakal and Vibha Thapa in a 2-1 set to win the title. The winner received a prize of Rs 40,000 and the runner-up pair received Rs 30,000.
In the competition jointly organized by Kathmandu Metropolitan City and Kathmandu District Badminton Association, cash prizes were awarded to the top eight places in men's and women's singles and the top eight teams in mixed doubles. A total of Rs 282,000 was awarded in all three categories.
The winners were presented with trophies, medals and checks by Kathmandu Metropolitan City Acting Mayor Sunita Dangol, Nepal Badminton Association President Ramji Bahadur Shrestha, Nepal Olympic Committee (NOC) General Secretary Rajiv Shrestha, Kathmandu Municipality Social Development Committee President Ram Kumar KC, and Kathmandu District Badminton Association President and Nepal Badminton Association Secretary Deepak Thapa.
Former badminton player Kumar Mohan Bahadur Shahi was honored with the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ at the closing ceremony.
The organizers claim that the tournament, which cost a budget of 3.6 million, is the largest community badminton tournament in the capital. The tournament aimed to connect all 32 wards on a single sports platform.
