The Sharad Chandra Shaha Memorial Foundation on Tuesday honored distinguished personalities and emerging athletes who have made unparalleled contributions to Nepali sports.
This year's Sharad Chandra Shaha Sports Award was presented to former Olympian boxer Umesh Maskey. He participated in the 1980 Moscow Olympics and 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.
Maskey has continued to contribute to the promotion of boxing in Nepal even after retiring from active sports. The foundation said that the award was made in recognition of Maskey's contribution to the development of boxing, who served as treasurer from 1988 to 1992 and president of the Nepal Boxing Association from 1995 to 2000. The Sharad Chandra Shaha Sports Award for athletes was presented to star cricketer Sandeep Lamichhane. Sandeep, who made the country proud by becoming the first Nepali player to play in many franchise leagues around the world, including the Indian Premier League, also served as the captain of the national cricket team. It is said that the award was given in high appreciation of his historic success of recently setting the world record for the fastest player to take 200 wickets in One-Day International cricket. Sandeep was not present at the program as he was out of the country. His award was received by Kathmandu District Cricket Association Secretary and former national team player Kiran Rana. Both the honorees were presented with a cash prize of Rs. 250,000 each and a certificate of appreciation. The main objective of the
Foundation is to provide encouragement, assistance, and recognition and honor to individuals and organizations who are dedicated to improving the sports development activities of the nation or have contributed in any way.
Sharad Chandra Shaha, who was the Member Secretary of the National Sports Council and the President of the Nepal Olympic Committee from 2034 to 2045, is known as a person who brought major changes in the history of Nepali sports. He also became the Vice President of the Olympic Council of Asia. He was also the planner of Nepal's grand national games and the South Asian Games. A foundation was established by his family on 30 November 2020 in Shah's memory.
