The Netherlands defeated Sweden 5-1 in their Group F match at the 2026 World Cup in Houston on Saturday. Goals from Brian Broby and Cody Gakpo gave the Netherlands a 2-2 lead and put them in contention for the title.
The Netherlands, who drew 2-2 with Japan in their opening match, moved to the top of their group after a comfortable win over Sweden. Sweden, who beat Tunisia 5-1 in their opening match, will need to beat Japan in their next match to advance to the knockout stages.
The Netherlands will now play Tunisia in their final group game. Sweden suffered their biggest defeat in a World Cup since losing 5-2 to Brazil in the 1958 final on home soil.
Brian Broby, playing for the first time in the tournament, gave the Netherlands the lead in the fifth minute. He converted a pass from Gakpo. He added a second goal in the 17th minute.
Gakpo scored twice in the nine minutes after the break to put the Netherlands in a strong position. Gakpo scored in the 47th and 54th minutes. Anthony Ilanga pulled one back for Sweden in the 59th minute. Crescencio Somerville scored the fifth goal for the Netherlands in the 89th minute.
