Minister for Education and Sports Sasmit Pokharel has said that Yamabuddha Park has become as they had imagined when it was in the metropolitan city, and that it will help take the sport of skating and skateboarding to the next level.

Inaugurating the ninth National Skateboard Competition organized by the Nepal Skating and Skateboarding Association on Sunday, Minister Pokharel said that the government is on a campaign to develop the sport by building such playgrounds with skateboards on public land.

Minister Pokharel said that he was excited about the construction of Yamabuddha Park near the Yellow Bridge in Hadigaun, Ward No. 5 of Kathmandu Metropolitan City. He also urged the locals to make good use of this park.

150 male and 100 female players from the country are participating in the competition. The first day of the two-day competition was the qualifying round on Saturday, while the second day, Sunday, is the competition between the best players.

The competition is being held in the ‘freestyle’ category of skateboarding. The best performing players will be awarded ‘Best Trick’ and ‘Best Run’ awards. The organizers have stated that the ‘Skateboarder of the Year’ will also be announced from the competition.

The first, second and third place players in the men’s and women’s senior categories will receive medals and certificates along with 30,000, 20,000 and 15,000 respectively.

The first, second and third place players in the junior men’s and women’s categories will receive 15,000, 10,000 and 5,000 cash prizes respectively, said the association’s president Achyut Khanal. The national skateboard competition has previously been organized in Biratnagar, Butwal, Pokhara and Kathmandu.
