Cristiano Ronaldo has expressed his optimism about the World Cup. He made the remarks before Portugal departed Lisbon for their base camp in Palm Beach, Florida, USA.
‘We went into the tournament with high expectations,’ said five-time Ballon d’Or winner Ronaldo. ‘Our preparations were very good, because we worked hard.’
Portugal’s veteran captain Ronaldo said he was also in good physical condition. ‘This is a very good generation, which will bring joy to the Portuguese people,’ he said of his team. ‘It is very important to start well from the first game.’ We will move forward together in every game after finishing top of the group.'
Portugal will start the 2026 World Cup in Houston on June 17 against Congo. Portugal, who are in Group 'K', will then play Uzbekistan and Colombia. The 41-year-old Ronaldo is playing his sixth World Cup. But there are concerns in the Portugal team that Roberto Martinez's strong team will not be able to play openly because of him.
Portugal recently played two friendlies against Chile and Nigeria. Both matches were won 2-1. But Ronaldo failed to score in both matches. Portugal finished third in the 1966 World Cup. Four years ago, the team reached the quarter-finals in Qatar.
