Defending champions Army Club and Grande Stars have won the fifth Nakhipot Open Men's and Women's Basketball Tournament.
Army emerged as the champions in the men's and Grande in the women's categories. In the men's finals held at the covered hall of the host Nakhipot Youth Club on Saturday, Army defeated IIMS Kirtipur by a score of 83-78 to defend the title. Army's Prajwal Maharjan scored 22 points.
Army, which took a 20-14 lead in the first quarter, fell behind 24-25 in the second. Army regained the lead in the third quarter by scoring 19-15. Although Kirtipur led 24-20 in the fourth quarter, it was not enough to win. The winner received a prize of Rs 100,000 and the runner-up Rs 50,000.
In the women's title match, Grande defeated Budhanilkantha team by a score of 67-34. Grande's Rinchen Moktan scored 20. Grandi, which won all four quarters, performed 21-10, 16-8, 21-9 and 9-7 respectively. The winner received 50,000 and the runner-up 25,000.
Army's Rabin Khatri and Grandi's Rinchen Moktan were declared the 'Most Valuable Player' in the men's category and 20,000 in the women's category. Both won 20,000 each. Army's Sayun Rai and Budhanilkantha's Urja Rana Magar were selected as emerging players. Both received 10,000 each.
The winners were awarded by the main sponsor, Lalitpur Metropolitan City Ward 14 Chairman Amritjung Mahat, the organizer Nakhipot Youth Club Chairman Indrajit Angbuhang Limbu and others.
19 teams competed in the men's category on a knockout basis, according to the organizing club member and competition coordinator Binod Shrestha. In the women's category, 6 teams played on a league-cum-knockout basis.
