Nepal has crashed out of the quarterfinals of the ACC Women's Premier Cup cricket. Thailand defeated Nepal by 56 runs on Wednesday in the ongoing competition in Malaysia. Thailand won the toss and elected to bat first at the Bayumas Oval in Kuala Lumpur and scored 130 runs for the loss of 4 wickets in the stipulated 20 overs.
In reply, Nepal could only score 74 runs for the loss of 7 wickets. Nepal has not been able to defeat Thailand since 2011. The defeat to Thailand is the latest in a series of failures for the Nepali women's cricket team. Nepal had defeated Qatar by 8 wickets and Bhutan by 51 runs in the group stage of this tournament. But after suffering a 69-run defeat in the final match of the group stage along with Hong Kong, the Nepali team was forced to play in the quarterfinals against strong contenders Thailand.
Nepal was all out for just 40 runs in that match against Hong Kong, which is also Nepal's lowest score in a women's Twenty20 International. Nepal also failed to qualify for the Asian Games after failing to make the top four in the Asian Games women's qualifiers held just before the start of the Premier Cup. Nepal, which lost to Malaysia in the semi-finals, was also defeated by China in the third-place play-off match of the Asian Games qualifiers. That was Nepal's first defeat against China.
Against Nepal, who have been performing poorly on their tour of Malaysia, on Wednesday, wicketkeeper Nanapat Khoncharoinkai scored an unbeaten 62 runs as Thailand scored a good score. She hit 6 fours in 51 balls. Similarly, Fanita Maya scored 26 runs in 21 balls with 2 fours and Chanida Suthirueng scored 16 runs in 27 balls with 1 four. Rubina Chhetri took 11 runs in 4 overs, Riya Sharma took 28 runs in 4 overs and Kavita Kunwar took 1 wicket each in 4 overs.
Nepal had a poor start in batting like in the previous matches. Ruby Podar was out for a duck in the second over. In the third over, another opener Samjhana Khadka was out for 11 runs in 11 balls and hit 2 boundaries. Vice-captain Pooja Mahato was out for 2 and captain Indu Verma for 7 runs.
The second player from Nepal to score in double figures was Soni Pakhrin. She scored 15 runs in 21 balls and hit 2 boundaries. Kavita Kunwar remained unbeaten on 1, Kavita Joshi on 4, Rubina on 6 and Sita on 3 runs. Thipatcha, Puthavong, Sunida Chaturongrattana and Suliporn Laomi took 2 wickets each for Thailand.
