Two major sports competitions, cricket and badminton, are being held with the support of Kathmandu Metropolitan City.

Kathmandu Metropolitan City Cup Ward Level Badminton Tournament 2083 and PL Singh Inter-Metropolitan City Twenty-20 Cup Cricket Tournament are to be organized on Wednesday. Information about both tournaments was given at a press conference.

Players from 32 wards of Kathmandu will compete at the NOC Earthquake Memorial Covered Hall in Dallu, Kathmandu-15 from 12 to 14 Ashad.

The tournament, jointly organized by Kathmandu Metropolitan City and Kathmandu District Badminton Association, will have technical support from the Nepal Badminton Association. Kathmandu Badminton President Deepak Thapa said that it has been conceived as the largest community badminton tournament in Kathmandu so far and the aim is to bring together players from 32 wards of Kathmandu Metropolitan City in one place.

The total budget of the tournament is 3.6 million, of which 3 million will be borne by Kathmandu Metropolitan City and 6 million by Kathmandu District Badminton Association.

Talent identification and development from the grassroots level, increasing community participation through ward representation, Ram Kumar KC, coordinator of the Metropolitan City's Social Development Department, said that the aim is to ensure equal participation of women and men, promote an active and healthy lifestyle, and strengthen social harmony and unity through sports.

There will be three open competitions. Each ward will select 2 men and 2 women. Men's singles and women's singles will have 1 player each, and mixed doubles will have 1 man and 1 woman. Each player will be allowed to participate in only one category. Cash prizes will be awarded to the winning players.

The men's and women's singles winners will receive 32,000, the second will receive 20,000, the third will receive 10,000, and the fifth to eighth will receive 2,500.

The mixed doubles winner will receive 40,000, the second will receive 30,000, and the third will receive 16,000.

Mayors Cup winner to receive Rs 1.1 million

Similarly, the PL Singh Inter-Metropolitan Cup (Mayors Cup) cricket tournament will be held from 4-13 Ashad with the management and technical support of the Bagmati Province Cricket Association.

The tournament, which is aimed at the sustainable development of Nepali cricket, promotion of internal sports talent, and mutual harmony and expansion of sports culture among the metropolitan cities, will feature teams from 6 metropolitan cities across the country, Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Bharatpur, Birgunj, Biratnagar and Pokhara.

The winning team of the tournament will receive a prize of Rs 1.1 million and the runner-up team will receive Rs 5 million. This is a competition with a huge prize money in domestic cricket. Earlier, the team that won the Prime Minister's Cup national tournament received Rs 1 million and the runner-up received Rs 5 million.

The category winners of the tournament to be held at the Tribhuvan University International Cricket Ground, Kirtipur will also receive prizes. Bagmati Province Cricket Association President Paras Khadka said that the players who won the Player of the Tournament, Best Bowler, Best Batter and Emerging Player awards will be rewarded.
