The Nakhipot Youth Club is organizing the 5th Nakhipot Open Men's and Women's Basketball Tournament. The tournament will begin on Sunday.

The participation of 18 teams in the men's and 7 in the women's competition has been confirmed, said Indrajit Limbu, chairman of the organizing club, at a press conference on Wednesday. He said that the number of participating teams may increase as the team registration period is until Friday. The men's competition will be played in a knockout format and the women's competition in a league-cum-knockout format. Army in the men's competition and Mountain Movers in the women's competition are the previous winners.

The organizers have stated that each team will be allowed to sign three foreign players. There is a provision for 2 players to play in that. Binod Shrestha, a member of the organizing club and competition coordinator, said that the participation of at least 2 teams from outside the valley has been confirmed. Both teams will be from Dharan. John and the Local Band and the Dharan team from Dharan have confirmed their participation. This is the first time a team from Mofasal is participating.

The winner in the men's competition will receive a prize of Rs 100,000 and the runner-up will receive Rs 50,000. The winner of the women's category will receive a prize of Rs 50,000 and the runner-up will receive a prize of Rs 25,000. The Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the men's category will receive a prize of Rs 20,000 and the MVP of the women's category will receive a prize of Rs 15,000. Emerging male/female players will be awarded Rs 10,000 each.

Sujan Rai, treasurer of the organizing club, said that the tournament will cost around Rs 1.5 million. The final of the tournament, which will be held with the main sponsorship of Lalitpur Metropolitan City-14 and the technical support of the Nepal Basketball Association, will be held on 30 Jestha. Apart from basketball, the Nakhipot Youth Club has been organizing volleyball and badminton tournaments with attractive cash prizes.
