Runners from Jumla have dominated the sixth Annapurna Marathon organized from Annapurna Base Camp to Ghandruk. Dal Bahadur Kunwar won the title in the men's category and Manju Rawat won the title in the women's category.
Dal Bahadur won the first place in the competition organized on Wednesday to mark the 76th Annapurna Climbing Day. He had finished third in the previous edition. Tilak Bahadur Sunuwar of the Nepali Army finished second in 4 hours, 10 minutes and 8 seconds. Last year's winner Sunuwar improved his time by 14 minutes but could not retain the title.
Sachin Gurung, a local runner from Ghandruk, came third in 4 hours, 49 minutes and 12 seconds. He said that he had managed to enter the top three for the first time after 6 years of continuous practice.
Runners from Jumla also dominated the women's category. Manju Rawat finished the race in 6 hours 14 minutes 19 seconds and secured the first place. Rajya Lakshmi Rawal finished the race in 6 hours 56 minutes 25 seconds and Kalpana Budha finished the race in 7 hours 56 seconds. All three are athletes from Jumla.
Annapurna Rural Municipality Chairman Bishnu KC inaugurated the competition at 7 am from the Annapurna Base Camp. The runners completed the race from the base camp via Machhapuchhre Base Camp, Deurali, Himalaya, Dobhan, Bembo, Sinuwa, Chomrong, Chuile and Kimrong Khola to Ghandruk.
In the competition organized by the Annapurna Century Tourism Committee Ghandruk, the winner received Rs 150,000, the runner-up Rs 100,000 and the third place winner Rs 75,000. Rural Municipality Chairman KC, former chairman Yubaraj Kunwar and committee chairman Lalit Gurung distributed prizes to the winners.
The objective of the marathon organized on the occasion of Annapurna Climbing Day (June 3) is to promote tourism in the Annapurna region and expand sports tourism, said Gurung, chairman of the committee. This year, 51 runners, including 6 foreigners, participated in the competition. The organizers believe that this competition, which will be held in the Annapurna region, which is considered one of the best trekking routes in the world, will help promote tourism at the international level.
On this occasion, Bhupal Gurung, Pokhara correspondent of Kantipur Television, was awarded the Annapurna Tourism Journalism Award. The committee honored him with 25,000 rupees.
