Nepal will face two-time defending champions Bangladesh on Wednesday in the Women's SAFF Championship 2026, and coach Navin Neupane has described it as a 'very big' game for Nepali women's football. Nepal had a morning practice at the Bambolin Athletics Sports Ground the day before the semi-final.
While addressing the media after the training, coach Neupane claimed that the Nepali team is fully prepared for the semi-final, saying, 'The semi-final is not a big game for Nepal women's football, it is a very big game.' Our team is physically and mentally ready for this game. We are also excited about this game.'
Nepal had lost to Bangladesh in the finals of the last two editions of the tournament. Therefore, Nepal will have an opportunity to avenge the defeats suffered in these two finals. But coach Neupane claimed that there is no revenge in football. He said, ‘We do not have a sense of revenge in our minds. Our only objective is to win the tournament title and the semi-finals are a stepping stone before that.’
The Bangladeshi team, however, had canceled the proposed training program on Tuesday. The team did not participate in the training program due to the death of Bangladeshi player Seuli Azam’s mother. Apart from that, the Bangladeshi women’s team has been in controversy recently. However, coach Neupane considered Bangladesh to be a strong opponent.
He said, ‘Despite the rumors about the Bangladeshi team outside, this is a strong team. We are not in favor of considering Bangladesh weak. I think Bangladesh is a technically strong team. Our focus is on the game against this team. We will have to present ourselves strongly in the game against Bangladesh. We will have to play better than the previous match.'
Preeti Rai, who arrived in Goa from Cambodia just the day before, has joined the training and is expected to play against Bangladesh from the start. After her arrival, Renuka Nagarkote will handle the Nepali team's midfield along with Preeti. After Bangladesh's match in the league stage, coach Peter Boulter had also said that the match against Nepal will be exciting.
