Sanyog Kapali of Nepal Police Club and Yonggi Poudel of APF have emerged champions in the 42nd National Table Tennis Championship.

Sanyog and Yonggi became national champions for the first time in the men's and women's singles. All four players who reached the finals in both men's and women's singles were certain to become the new national champions.

Sanyog defeated Alex Maharjan of his own club by 11-5, 13-11, 11-8, 11-1 in the men's singles final at the National Table Tennis Training Center in Lainchaur on Sunday. Sanyog's biggest achievement in the national competition was reaching the semifinals. Rubin Maharjan of Bagmati Province and Himal Bista of Sudurpaschim Province finished third.

Yonggi made her title journey unforgettable in the women's category. 18-year-old Yonggi won the title in her first participation in the national competition. She defeated the challenge of top two seeds Ivana Thapa of Koshi in the title clash by 11-6, 8-11, 12-10, 11-9, 11-8. Yonggi had also defeated Ivana in the group stage.

Earlier, Yonggi had stopped top-seeded nine-time national champion Nabita Shrestha of Police in the semifinals by 4-3 sets. Nabita and Rabina Maharjan of Police came third.

In the four-day competition, 116 players from 10 teams, including seven provinces and three departmental teams (Police/Army/APF), competed in 11 events, including senior, junior and cadet.

Earlier, Nischal Thapa of APF and Suramya Shakya of Army won gold in the Cadet U-15 Singles Boys and Suramya Shakya of Army won gold in the Girls and Jayasnu Maharjan of Army won gold in the Boys and Prajna Maharjan of Police won gold in the Girls. Nepal Police team came first in the Men's/Women's Team Event. The pair of Bagmati's Sujan Gadal and Prajil Bhattarai, in the men's doubles, the pair of APF's Anita Maharjan and Diksha Dahal, and the pair of Police's Sanyog and Nabita were crowned champions in the mixed doubles.

The winners were awarded by Banepa Municipality Mayor Shanti Ratna Shakya, the chairman of the All Nepal Table Tennis Association, Brijendra Bahadur Hamal, and others. The 41st edition of the national tournament was held during the 9th National Games held in Pokhara.
