The government has allocated the budget for the fiscal year 2083/84 with the aim of investing in infrastructure in Nepali sports. Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle had prioritized sports infrastructure in his budget speech presented in Parliament on Friday. He has allocated a budget of Rs 4.3 billion for sports.
Last year, the total budget was Rs 6.7 billion 7.4 billion, which is under the Ministry of Youth and Sports. This year, a budget of Rs 4.3 billion has been allocated for sports only. Accordingly, this is the largest budget for sports so far. The size of the budget has also increased as Nepal has to participate in the 20th Asian Games this year and organize the 10th National Games.
Finance Minister Wagle has announced that 10 football stadiums in the country with a capacity of at least 8,000 spectators will be upgraded with floodlights within the next 3 years, linking sports infrastructure with youth development and the local economy.
Recently, it was announced that the Nepal Super League (NSL), a football franchise league, will be held in a new format. It was stated that the NSL, which will feature up to 10 teams, will be played on a home and away system. For that, while only Dasharath Stadium and Pokhara Stadium in Kathmandu are ready, budget is being allocated to upgrade football stadiums in other major areas.
‘Modern cricket stadiums will be built in 8 major cities within 5 years. Indoor multipurpose stadiums with a capacity of at least 2,000 will be built in Biratnagar, Lahan, Kathmandu, Pokhara, Butwal, Surkhet and FAPLA in Dhangadhi within three years,’ said Finance Minister Wagle. ‘The design of Moolpani Cricket Stadium and Academy (Kathmandu), Girija Prasad Koirala Cricket Stadium (Biratnagar Baijnathpur) and FAPLA Cricket Stadium (Dhangadhi, Kailali) will be reviewed and investment modalities will be prepared.’
FAPLA has already completed the process of acquiring 38 bighas of land. Subash Shahi, Chairman of the FAPLA International Cricket Stadium and Sports Village Infrastructure Construction Development Committee, says that the government addressed FAPLA through the budget after the project was successfully included in the National Project Bank by completing the Detailed Project Report (DPR) and Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA).
He said, "It is very encouraging that the budget has been allocated to take the physical construction work of the FAPLA International Cricket Stadium and FAPLA Multi-Purpose Covered Hall to the contracting process this year. This is not just a budget allocation, but a historical belief in the dream and potential of the Far West for decades."
The budget has allocated funds to hold the 10th National Games in Surkhet and to build the necessary infrastructure for the proposed 11th National Games in Madhesh Province. The date of the 10th National Games, which was supposed to be held in Karnali Province, has been postponed several times.
‘Agreement will be made to select students with special interest and ability in sports from the basic level of school and provide them with training with necessary facilities,’ Wagle said during his budget speech. ‘Free lifelong health care will be provided to athletes who win international medals so that they can live a respectable life after retirement.’
