The National Sports Council (NSC) has decided to recall Chhumbi Lama, who was nominated as its representative to the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN).
When Tankalal Ghising was the member-secretary of the National Cricket Council, the National Cricket Council had sent Lama to CAN as an ex-officio member on Chaitra 29, 2080. The National Cricket Council decided to recall Lama by cutting a letter on Monday. Lama was in the capacity of spokesperson in CAN. This was his second term as a nominated member from the National Cricket Council. There is a legal provision to send two representatives from the National Cricket Council to the elected 17-member CAN.
‘As you have been nominated and sent as an ex-officio member of the Nepal Cricket Association from Chaitra 29, 2080, you are hereby informed that you have been recalled from your position as a council representative member of the Nepal Cricket Association with effect from Jestha 11, 2083, as per the provisions of Sub-section (4) of Section 3 of the CAN Statute,’ the letter signed by Chandra Kumar Rai, head of the National Cricket Council’s Association Coordination Branch, states.
When contacted on this issue, NSC member-secretary Ramcharitra Mehta could not be contacted. CAN secretary Paras Khadka said that this was a decision of NSC and CAN had no role in it. ‘CAN has no affiliation with the representative sent by NSC as a member, the answer lies with NSC,’ Secretary Khadka told Kantipur, ‘We have coordinated with NSC on this issue. They will decide whether they were under pressure or if they were trying to bring someone else.’
Khadka further said, ‘There is a shortage of capable people in the sports association, it is not necessary that one capable person should be in the association, everything is not determined by the position alone, one can also work in other roles. There are many bases for developing cricket, one should not get stuck in one position. Chhumbi has played many roles in cricket, from COO. We have been getting good support from the government on other issues.’
Apart from Lama, the NCP had also nominated and sent Durgananda Chaudhary as a member on 23 Magh 2081. However, the council decided to recall him on 23 Pus 2082, saying that he had not performed satisfactorily in his nominated capacity and had not coordinated with the council.
