Rangbhang Samaj UK FC has won the main title of the 24th edition of the Gorkha Cup football tournament held in the UK.
Rangbhang Samaj defeated Guruji Elite FC 2-0 in the final held on Sunday night according to Nepali time to lift the prestigious title. Guruji Elite was the runner-up last year as well.
According to Captain Deepak Ghale, Sports Secretary of Tamu Dhee UK and Coordinator of the 24th edition of the Gorkha Cup, the tournament was held at the Queen's Avenue Sports Field (playground) in Aldershot, UK.
The winner of the main tournament, Rangbhang Samaj UK, received a trophy and a certificate along with 3,500 pounds. Runner-up Guruji Elite FC received a trophy and a certificate along with 2,000 pounds. Sam Thapa of Rangbhang Samaj UK was declared the ‘Best Manager’. Iniola Alamo of Nepjom FC became the top scorer of the tournament. Nwang Sherpa of Rangbhang Samaj UK was declared the ‘Player of the Match’.
Intake Zero Four became the champion of the Veterans’ side. The match went to a penalty shootout after a 2-2 draw in regulation time. Intake Zero Four won the title by defeating Plumstead FC 3-2 in a sudden death match after a 5-5 draw.
The winning team received 1,800 pounds and the runner-up 1,200 pounds. Som Thapa was declared the ‘Best Manager’, Nishant Gurung the ‘Top Scorer’ and Sherjung Gurung the ‘Player of the Match’ for the Veterans’ side.
Tamang Samaj UK FC became the winner in the women's category. Tamang Samaj won the title by defeating the previous champion Roundbolt FC 3-0 in the final. The winning team received 600 pounds and the runner-up team received 400 pounds along with a trophy. Suk Lama Tamang of Tamang Samaj was declared the 'Player of the Match'.
A total of 57 teams participated in the competition, including 39 teams in the main category, 16 teams in the veteran category and 2 teams in the women's category, informed Deepak Ghale, Sports Secretary of Tamu Dhin UK and Coordinator of the 24th edition of the Gorkha Cup. According to him, the game, which started at 9 am, was played till around 8 pm.
The winners and runners-up teams were awarded prizes by Tamu Dhee UK President Jumkaji Gurung, Mayor of Rushmoor Borough Council Councillor Callum Stewart, MP Alex Baker, Military Attaché of the Nepali Embassy in London, Assistant Rathi Anup Shah and others.
At the event, Tamu Dhee UK handed over £5,500 each to Rushmoor Borough Council and the Gorkha Welfare Trust. On this occasion, the ‘Legend of Gorkha Cup’ award was presented to Dennis Maharjan. Melissa Regmi, a Nepali-origin player playing under-15 football in Scotland, was also honored.
The Gorkha Cup, which started in 1996 with a 7 ‘A’ side, has now been established as a 9 ‘A’ side competition. According to the organizers, this year’s competition was watched by more than 20,000 spectators. The Gorkha Cup, held in the UK, is considered the largest Nepali sports and community event outside Nepal.
