Nepal, led by Dipendra Singh Airi, announced a 14-member team on Sunday for the Asian Games men's cricket qualifiers to be held in Singapore. The tournament will start from May 31 and will continue until June 9.
Nepal will compete in Group 'A' against Malaysia, Qatar and China in the qualifiers for the Asian Games to be held in Aichi/Nagoya, Japan in October. Group 'B' includes Oman, Hong Kong, Bahrain and host Singapore. The top two teams in the group will advance to the semi-finals.
The Nepali team includes Dipendra, Rohit Poudel, Kushal Bhurtel, Asif Sheikh, Kushal Malla, Arif Sheikh, Sandeep Jora, Lokesh Bam, Sompal Kami, Karan KC, Nandan Yadav, Sandeep Lamichhane, Sher Malla and Shahab Alam.
Gulshan Jha, Bashir Ahmed and Lalit Rajbanshi from the team that played the Twenty20 World Cup in Mumbai, India in January are not in the team that will go to Singapore. Kushal Malla and Shahab have got a chance in their place. Malla got a chance in two Twenty20 Internationals held in Kirtipur last month.
The Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) has allowed Gulshan and Ishan Pandey to play for JB Bruges for the EU T20 to be held in Belgium from June 6. Gulshan will not be in the Nepal team. Ishan has recently been playing only ODIs for Nepal. Bruges had taken Dipendra Singh Airi, Lalit Rajbanshi, and Anil Sah from the draft.
CAN spokesperson Chhumbi Lama said that only players who are not in the Nepal and Nepal 'A' teams have been allowed to play in the Belgian league. Anil and Lalit are in the Nepal 'A' team that will play in the All India Gold Cup in India. When contacted, the representatives of Bruges claimed that they have already obtained the NOC of the Nepali players and that they will come to Belgium after completing their responsibilities as national team players.
Rohit Poudel, Asif Sheikh, Lokesh Bam and Sandeep Lamichhane were also picked up by various teams in the draft in the EU T20 League. Their trip to Belgium has become uncertain.
