Despite a top-order batting collapse, the Nepali women's cricket team defeated Malaysia by 2 wickets in the first Twenty20 International on Wednesday.

Malaysia, who won the toss after Pooja Mahato took 3 wickets at the Vayumas Oval ground in Kuala Lumpur, was all out for 67 runs in 16.5 overs.  Player of the Match Pooja took three wickets for just 13 runs in 4 overs. 

Manisha Upadhyay took 17 with 1 maiden in 4 overs and Riya Sharma took 2 wickets for 13 runs in 2.5 overs and Kavita Kunwar took 12 with 1 maiden in 3 overs and Sita Rana Magar took 11 runs in 3 overs and 1 wicket each. 

Ilsa Hunter was the only Malaysian to score in double figures.  She scored 10 runs in 14 balls with 2 fours.  Captain Mas Ilyasa 8, Aina Hashim, Idrina Nabil and Dhanushree Muhunan had scored 7 runs each.

Nepal had a very poor start in reply. Openers Bindu Rawal and Pooja were dismissed without opening their accounts. Ruby Podar scored 22 runs in 22 balls with 2 fours. Then captain Indu Verma and former captain Rubina Chhetri were dismissed 1-1, Kavita 3 and Sita 5 runs.

Opener Samjhana Khadka, who played well, scored 32 runs in 39 balls with 2 fours. She was also out when Nepal needed 6 runs to win. After Kavita Joshi scored 6 with 1 four in 8 balls and Riya Sharma remained unbeaten on 4 runs, Nepal scored 71 runs in 17.3 overs.

The second and final match between Nepal and Malaysia will be played on Friday. Both teams are playing this match in preparation for the Asian Games qualifiers and the ACC Premier Cup to be held in Malaysia.
