The Kabha Women's Volleyball Championship will begin on Friday at the Rakhep Covered Hall in Tripureshwor. The organizer Nepal Volleyball Association has stated that all preparations for the championship have been completed.
The championship will feature eight countries from FIVB's Central Asia region, including Nepal, Iran, Kyrgyzstan, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Maldives and Kazakhstan. The championship, which will last until 15th Jestha, will be important for all participating countries as it is a FIVB ranking competition.
In the pre-match conference held at the stadium on Thursday, the captains of all eight countries informed about their preparations for the championship and expressed their enthusiasm for performing well.
Two-time champion Nepal will be looking to win the title on home soil this time too. Nepal will face close rivals India on the opening day on Friday. Nepal's 'A' group includes India, Kyrgyzstan and Maldives. The other group ‘B’ includes Iran, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Kazakhstan.
Nepal is captained by Niruta Thagunna. Nepal is playing an international competition for the first time under her captaincy. She said that the preparation was good even though it was short, and she was more enthusiastic due to the support of the domestic audience. She said that even though there are many new players in the national team, the team coordination is good because they have always played together. She said, ‘Our team is well prepared, the performance will be seen on the court.’
Nandana Kalappi, the captain of the Indian team, who is also a former winner, said that her team is confident of defending the title despite the short preparation with a new coach.
The Nepali team includes captain Niruta, spikers Usha Bhandari, Salina Budha Magar, Kamna Bista, Rima Kunwar, Meena Suna, setters Pragati Nath and Jasna Mahato, liberos Salina Shrestha, Shanti Tamang, blockers Sumitra Regmi, Sunita Khatri, Basanti Saud and Alisha Manandhar. The team's head coach is Jagdish Bhatt.
