Prince Dahal of APF Club and Rashila Maharjan of Tribhuvan Army Club have emerged champions in the 42nd edition of the National Badminton Tournament held after a long time.
Prince and Rashila became national champions in the men's singles and women's singles categories of the tournament held on Saturday at the National Sports Council (NSC) Covered Hall in Tripureshwor. This national tournament was organized after four years.
In the final, Prince defeated Army's emerging player Bidhan Adhikari in straight sets of 21-16, 21-3 to win the title. Prince became the national champion for the second time. Earlier, he was the national champion in 2079 BS. Devraj Rana of APF and Praful Maharjan of Army came third.
In the women's category, Rashila defeated three-time national champion Nangsaldevi Tamang in straight sets of 21-18, 21-18 to win the title. This is Rashila's third national title. She had previously won the title in 2076 BS and 2079 BS. Amita Giri and Rihanna Sherchan of Army came third. Both Prince and Rashila have also won gold in doubles.
Rashila won the title in women's doubles with Amita. They defeated the pair of Rosi Rai and Nisam Subba of Koshi Province in straight sets of 21-17, 21-17. The pair of Nangsal and Bhawanadevi Kidam of Koshi and Sita Rai and Sushma Shrestha of Nepal Police Club finished third.
In the men's doubles final, Prince defeated his departmental pair when he won the title with Devraj. Their pair defeated the pair of Bhoj Bahadur Gurung and Kshitij Khanal in straight sets of 21-10, 21-18 to win the gold. The pair of Sunil Joshi and Kabir KC of Police and Raju Garanja and Suman Shakya of Bagmati Province won third place.
In mixed doubles, the pair of Bidhan and Amita of Army succeeded. They defeated the Army pair of Praful and Rashila in competitive sets of 21-11, 20-22, 21-19. APF's Prince and Pooja Thamsuhang and Police's Kabir KC and Sushma Shrestha finished third.
The Army Club became the team champion by winning 3 gold medals in the competition organized by the Nepal Badminton Association. Army won a prize of Rs 1 lakh. APF won 2 gold medals in the competition consisting of 5 events. The Army team was determined to be the champion even before the final of the mixed doubles. Since the mixed doubles, which is the last event, was decided between Army players, the team that would become the team champion was decided before the final. Before that, Army and APF had achieved 2-2 success in the final of four events. 115 players from 10 teams, including seven provincial and three departmental teams, competed in 5 events.
The winners were awarded by Nepal Olympic Committee President Jeevan Ram Shrestha and General Secretary Rajiv Shrestha and the organizing Badminton Association President Ramji Bahadur Shrestha.
