Cristian Chivu won the Serie A title for Inter Milan for the fourth time on Sunday. But it was his first as a coach.

Inter were certain to win the Italian top division title when they beat Parma 2-0. Chivu is the hero behind Inter's success. As everyone knows, Inter are one of the biggest clubs in Europe.

Many were surprised when Inter appointed the 45-year-old coach at the start of the season. His only previous experience at the top level was a brief spell in charge of Parma. His real identity was as a former Romanian defender. He was also popular within Inter as a former player. Later, he also took charge of the youth team at Inter for a while.

Cesc Fabregas was the first choice to become Inter's coach at the start of the season. After Simone Inzaghi left the post, Fabregas' name was natural. But Como refused to let him go, so Chivu got a chance at Inter. What happened next, as a coach, was better and higher than many expected. He was in a state of mourning when he arrived at Inter.

Inter was badly defeated by Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in the last European Champions League final, that too 5-0. At that time, there were rumors that Inzaghi was now going to Saudi Arabia. Napoli and AC Milan had strengthened their teams a bit for the new season, adding new players. But Inter did not change much, everyone was the same old face.

And this same team had lost a lot at the end of last season, despite being close to success. But Chivu has now made this the champion team. He is especially a legend of Inter, because he was a key member of the team that won Serie A, the Italian Cup and the European Champions League under José Mourinho in 2010. That ‘treble’ achievement was amazing.

Chivu spent 6 seasons at Inter and played 168 games. During this time, he won three consecutive Serie A titles, as well as the Club World Cup. He played most of his playing career in Italy. After playing for Roma, he moved to Inter in 2007. In Roma's final season, he won the Italian Cup.

At that time, his main contemporary was Francesco Totti. And the coach was Luciano Spalletti. The coach who brought Chivu to Roma was none other than Fabio Capello. After winning the league title for Inter, his reaction was, 'I always want to be a winner. I am grateful to those who have trusted me and given me the responsibility I am now.'
