Nottingham Forest beat Aston Villa 1-0 in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final on Thursday to take a two-legged lead. Chris Wood scored the winning goal from the penalty spot at the City Ground. The win gave Forest a chance after Villa defender Lucas Digne handled the ball. The win took Forest to the brink of reaching a European final for the first time since 1980. Forest, who have been in a good form recently, are unbeaten in nine matches in all competitions.
Forest are also five points above the relegation zone in the English Premier League. In the other semi-final on Thursday, Braga beat Freiburg 2-1. Nene Dorgeles scored the decisive goal in second-half injury time.
