The District Sports Development Committee in Jumla has been without a coach for a long time. Some have retired and some have not been able to send coaches. There is a shortage of coaches because some have retired and the Sports Council has not been able to send them.

There are currently neither sports coaches nor players in the district. The sports sector has started to slow down. According to Kavidatta Neupane, head of the District Sports Development Committee Jumla, all the posts of coaches are vacant except for one karate coach. Karate coach Khadak Malla is a badminton player.

Due to the lack of coaches, no sports activities are being held. Due to this, it is not possible to form a district-level team and compete. Office Chief Neupane said that although there are 6 positions in the Sports Development Committee, 5 coaching posts are vacant. Currently, the District Football Association Jumla has appointed its own coach.

He said that despite repeated requests for coaches from the Sports Council, no one has listened. ‘There is a shortage of coaches in Jumla. It is difficult to run sports activities,’ he said, ‘The situation is similar in many districts of Karnali.’

Karate coach Malla does not have a single player. He has no work to do except go and play in the President’s Running Shield held in the district. Athletics coach and world record-holder Hari Bahadur Rokaya and volleyball coach Baram Bahadur Mahat have retired. Sports enthusiasts say that it is sad that the District Sports Development Committee is without a coach.

The President’s Running Shield should be held every year in the district. Last year, no one except Hima Rural Municipality organized it. Two years ago, Tatopani Rural Municipality organized district-level sports. But due to the lack of coaches, this competition, which should be organized every year, is not being held. Currently, there are neither coaches nor district-level players in the Sports Development Committee. On the contrary, even talented players are being overlooked.

The Karnali Provincial Government formed a district-level committee. Dhankrishna Pandey was appointed as the chairman and Sangita Acharya as the member-secretary. But their entire tenure was spent in controversy.

Prabhu Budha, a volleyball player from Tila Rural Municipality, said that sports are not being held in remote areas anymore. ‘Earlier, volleyball games were being held in every settlement,’ he said, ‘Now, sports activities in the villages are like zero.’

The eight local levels of Jumla brought a budget of Rs 3.32 billion for the fiscal year 2082/83. But no money was allocated for the sports sector. Due to lack of infrastructure, even regular sports competitions have not been held in Jumla. Neupane, the head of the District Sports Development Committee, Jumla, informed that efforts are being made to create an ‘annual sports calendar’ to revive the sports sector that has been dormant for a long time. Sports experts say that the eight municipalities of Jumla should allocate a small budget for the development of the sports sector and the encouragement of players. However, no one is shown interest. World record-holding runner Rokaya said that the sports sector of Jumla has been badly affected.

‘There is no sports infrastructure in the district. There are no regular competitions. There is also a lack of places for regular practice,’ he said, ‘The structures that are being built are also stalled. There is no budget for the players to eat simple gram and eggs. And how will the sports sector develop?’

As the potential of sports is being undermined due to lack of budget, stakeholders have emphasized that regular competitions should be held with the coordination and cooperation of all. District Sports Development Committee Office Chief Neupane said that Jumla has the potential to be made a sports hub with everyone's coordination and cooperation.

He says that even if the municipality spends crores on infrastructure development and spends only lakhs on the sports sector, Jumla will become a sports hub. 'Many have not shown interest,' said Chief Neupane, 'I have decided to make the sports sector dynamic despite the lack of resources.'

Due to lack of budget, the construction of a parapet at the volleyball field under construction under the auspices of the Sports Development Committee has been stalled. There is also no good sports field in the district.
