Sebastian Sabey made history on Sunday by running the London Marathon in under two hours. He also became the first athlete to run a marathon in under two hours. The Kenyan Sabey completed the race in 1 hour 59 minutes 30 seconds in a stunning performance.
All three finishers in the race broke the previous world record. The late Calvin Kiptum set a time of 2 hours 35 seconds at the 2023 Chicago Marathon. Defending champion Savay was challenged by Ethiopia's Yomif Kejcha. But Savay pulled off a decisive performance towards the end of the race.
Kejcha finished second in 1 hour 59 minutes 41 seconds. His performance in his 'debut' race was also a record. Uganda's Jacob Kiplomo finished third in 2 hours 28 seconds. "I'm very happy and feeling great," Savay, 31, said after the race. "The start of the race was good and I maintained it until the end." When the race was over and I saw the time, I was so happy.'
He added, 'I had been training for this race for four months. Today I got the reward. My goal was the world record.' In 2019, Kenyan Ilid Kichoga completed the marathon in 1 hour, 59 minutes and 40 seconds, but for this he used special shoes and it was not a competition. That is why his performance was not considered a record. Sabe, on the other hand, used Adidas' new Pro Evo 3 Super Shoe for the London Marathon and it weighed less than 100 grams.
Tigist Aseefa also set a new world record in the women's category. Aseefa, an Olympic champion and silver medalist at the World Championships, completed the race in 2 hours, 15 minutes and 41 seconds. She improved her own performance by 9 seconds to set a new world record.
