The sixth Beach Games are officially starting in Sanya, China from Wednesday.  The games, which are being held again after a gap of about 10 years, were first held in Bali, Indonesia in 2008.

The last time they were held in Da Nang, Vietnam in 2016. The official opening ceremony is scheduled to take place at the Beach Sports Complex in Sanya, Hainan Province, at 8 pm on Wednesday, Chinese time.

The games, which completed their fifth edition in 2016, had been dormant for a decade due to various international circumstances, including the Corona pandemic.

This is the second time that China has revived this sporting event by organizing it. The first time was in Shandong in 2012.  Nepal is participating in two competitions in the Beach Games. The women's kabaddi team and two wrestlers arrived in Sanya on Monday night to participate in the competition.

The beach-focused games organized by the Olympic Council of Asia will continue until April 30. This is the first time that such a large-scale intercontinental sports event is being held since the free trade port came into operation in Hainan Province.

More than 10,000 players, coaches and officials from 43 Asian countries and regions have gathered in Sanya for 14 sports including volleyball, football, swimming, water polo, handball, dragon boat racing, basketball, rock climbing, wrestling, and kabaddi.

Nepal has been participating in the Asian Beach Games since the first edition. In the fourth Asian Beach Games held in Phuket, Thailand in 2014, Bhagwati Majhi won a bronze medal in sambo in the 52 kg weight category. Judging from past performances, Nepal has high hopes for the women's kabaddi team in this year's competition.
