The fourth edition of the ward-level 'Mayor League Cup Running Shield Football Tournament' is to be organized in Varahakshetra Municipality from April 20. This information was given at a press conference on Sunday.
The Municipal Sports Development Committee has informed that the tournament will be organized in both league and knockout formats. The winner of the tournament will receive Rs 202,000 in cash, the runner-up Rs 101,000, the third-placed team Rs 51,000 and the fourth-placed team Rs 25,000.
Similarly, the 'Man of the Match' of each match will be awarded. The best player, best player, highest scorer and most disciplined team will receive appropriate prizes.
The winner of the tournament will receive an attractive silver trophy. Under the Running Shield system, if a team wins the title three times in a row, it will be able to keep the trophy permanently, informed Kapil Acharya, coordinator of the Municipal Sports Development Committee and chairman of Ward No. 7.
One team from each of the 11 wards of the municipality will participate in the competition. According to coordinator Acharya, this competition was started three years ago with the aim of encouraging local players and producing new talent.
The games of the competition, which will be conducted with the slogan 'Sports is our pride, our campaign to produce players', will be held at the playground of Basanta Ritu Secondary School in Ward No. 7, Devghat. At the press conference, the winner of the last edition, Ward No. 2, handed over the trophy to the organizer, and it was also informed that the groups were divided through the lottery.
