The prize for the winner of the college run at the Kantipur Half Marathon was a little different this time. The prize for the boys and girls winners of the 7-km college run was a full-service ticket to watch the final match of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Ajay Pandey and Anusiya Tandukar from Kapilvastu won the ticket on Saturday, becoming champions in the category. Extreme Energy Drinks will take care of all the management, including their airfare. Both are national-level athletes but in different disciplines. Ajay is a runner while Anusiya is a swimmer. Anusiya has taken a break from swimming as she has been busy with her studies lately. Anusiya from Kathmandu will not miss the races to be held in the valley on Saturday.

Both the winners are excited about watching the IPL final. Ajay is knowledgeable about cricket, while Anusiya is not interested in cricket, but she is in favor of not wasting the opportunity to watch the IPL final. Anusiya says, ‘I am planning to go with my family.’

Ajay, who is training for running in Kathmandu, said, ‘I had set a goal not to let this opportunity go to waste.’ I had not slept since last night, I was wondering whether I could win the race or not.’

He achieved his goal, that too for the second time in a row. He won the title by covering the distance in 25 minutes 35:14 seconds. His goal of improving his timing from last year was not achieved. Ajay said, ‘This time the route was uphill, so I could not improve my timing.’ Last year, his timing was 21 minutes 24:22 seconds.’

Ajay's challengers, Thakendra Sharma of NBS College and Bishwaram Kunwar of Bhaktapur Multiple Campus, came second and third. Thakendra completed the race in 26 minutes 18:40 seconds and Bishwaram completed the race in 26 minutes 29:45 seconds. Bishwaram had achieved the same position last year as well.

23-year-old Ajay won the bronze medal in the U-20 team in the Asian Cross Country Race held in Nepal two years ago. A Lumbini Province Champion, he won the road race title in Gorkha a week ago. Ajay, who dreams of reaching his peak in athletics, is currently training at the stadium to prepare for the national competition.

This is Anusiya's first participation in the Kantipur Half Marathon. She is a national swimming champion. She won three bronze medals in swimming at the 13th South Asian Games and participated in three World Championships and three Junior World Championships at the 19th Asian Games. Anusiya from Putalisadak is studying BBA at Kathmandu University School of Management. She said, ‘Due to my studies, I am not able to devote time to swimming.’ To keep myself healthy, I am participating in races held on Saturdays. That is why I dared to run the college run. I succeeded.’

Freestyle swimmer Anusiya won the title by completing the race in 34 minutes 21:85 seconds. Her closest competitor Sajina Ramdam of Wealth International School came second in 36 minutes 38:00 seconds and Samjhana Kulung Rai of Jay Multiple Campus came third in 38 minutes 07:00 seconds. There were about 1,000 competitors in this extreme college run.
