The ITF Asia 12 and Under Tennis Competition, a South Asian regional qualifier event, has started at the Tennis Complex in Satdobato from Monday. Along with Nepal, 33 players from India, Pakistan, Bhutan, Maldives and Sri Lanka are participating in the 5-day competition.
Bangladesh is not participating in the South Asian country being organized by the Nepal Tennis Association. Except for Bhutan, all other countries have 3 players each in boys and girls. It will be on the basis of team competition. There will be 2 singles and 1 doubles categories. The team that wins 2 matches will be the winner.
Nepal is in Group ‘B’ along with Pakistan and Maldives in the men’s category. Group ‘A’ includes India, Sri Lanka and Bhutan. The top two teams in the women’s and men’s categories will qualify for the Asian finals to be held in Singapore from September 15 to 20. Ajay Bista is the tournament director. The competition is being held under the supervision of Jonathan Stubbs, ITF Development Officer for East, West and South Asia.
ITF Silver Badge Referee Suprit Kadaviger is officiating. National Sports Council Member Secretary Ramcharitra Mehta inaugurated the competition by handing over the ball to the competition director Bista. Nepal Tennis Association President Manohar Das Mul and Sri Lankan Ambassador to Nepal Ruwanthi Delpitiya wished the players. ‘Play with enthusiasm, respect your opponent and enjoy the game, which makes you a better player,’ Das said at the opening ceremony.
ATF had been running this program since 2017. Since then, Nepal has hosted this competition in 2017, 2018, 2022 and 2024. Nepal’s men’s team in 2017, 2018 and 2019 and women’s team in 2018 reached the finals and qualified for the Asian qualifiers.
Both Nepali teams started the tournament on Monday with a win. In the boys' section, Nepal defeated Maldives 3-0. Nepal's Sabyajung Karki defeated Rayan Mohammad 6-0, 6-0 and Arit Malla defeated Jabril Jabbar 6-0, 6-0. In the doubles, Nepal's Sahansh Basnet and Arit defeated Ahmed Shahan and Rayan 6-2, 6-0.
In the girls' section, Nepal defeated Pakistan 3-0 in Group 'A'. Nepal's Arya Poudel defeated Saharin Umar 6-2, 6-0 and Sara Pant defeated Sahanur Umar 6-0, 6-1 in straight sets. In the doubles, Naira Ghale and Sara defeated Saharin and Sahanur 6-3, 6-0. In the boys' group 'A', Sri Lanka defeated Bhutan 3-0 and in the girls' group 'A', Sri Lanka defeated Maldives 2-1.
