Nepali karate player Erica Gurung has been denied a historic gold medal. She lost in the final of the WKF Karate One Premier League held in Leshan, Sichuan Province, China.

In the recently concluded women's 68 kg weight category final, Erica settled for a silver medal after losing 2-1 to top-seeded Sofya Berultseva of Kazakhstan in a competitive match.

This is her second silver medal in the Premier League. Earlier, Erica had reached the final of the Premier League in Istanbul, Turkey in January and ended up with a silver medal. She was also defeated along with Sofya.

Erica, who reached the final without being defeated in Leshan, missed the opportunity to take revenge on Chinese soil against her familiar rival Sofya.

Erica had won 5 fights on her way to the final. In the semifinals on Saturday, 12th-seeded Italian Ferracuti secured a place in the final by defeating Cleo 8-3.

The bronze medal in this weight category was won by Slovenia's Maria Gibret Zala. Maria is the same player whom Erika had defeated unilaterally in the quarterfinals by 8-0. In the bronze medal match, Maria defeated Ferracuti 7-4.

Erika, who won the Himalayan Warrior title, started her journey in the Karate One Premier League by winning a bronze medal in Rawat, Morocco last month.

Erika had won a historic silver medal for Nepal at the Hangzhou Asian Games in China two years ago. It was the first silver medal won by Nepal in karate at the Asian Games. Since then, she has won many international medals for Nepali karate.
