Tribhuvan Army Club's Binod Rokaya has become the champion in the 4th International Lumbini Peace Marathon held in Lumbini. Rokaya became the champion in the marathon organized on Saturday under the leadership of the Nepal Olympic Committee by covering the prescribed distance of 42.195 in 2 hours 17 minutes 55 seconds.
Rokaya, who came first, received a cash prize of Rs 350,000 and a gold medal. Army Club's Sushil Kumar Shahi came second. He covered the prescribed distance in 2 hours 18 minutes 16 seconds. He received Rs 250,000. Army Club's Narendra Singh Rawat came third. He covered the prescribed distance in 2 hours 19 minutes 58 seconds. He received Rs 150,000.
Army Club players also dominated the 21-kilometer half marathon for women. Purnalakshmi Neupane of Tribhuvan Army Club became the champion in the 21-kilometer half marathon. She received a prize of Rs 150,000. Santoshi Shrestha of Dhading, who has been winning various competitions before, secured the second place. She received Rs 100,000. Nisha Sarki of the Army came third and received Rs 80,000, informed Nepal Olympic Committee General Secretary Rajiv Shrestha.
The Lumbini Marathon, coordinated by the Olympic Committee, is organized by the Chinese Embassy in Nepal, Lumbini Development Fund, and Nepal Tourism Board. More than 600 runners from Nepal, India, America, Nigeria and other countries participated in the marathon. The 42.195-kilometer race, which started from Lumbini Square, ended in Lumbini itself.
The competition, organized with the aim of promoting peace and tourism, included a men's marathon, women's half marathon, and an open 5 km. The winners of the competition were awarded by Nepal Olympic Committee President Jeevan Ram Shrestha, Lumbini Development Fund Member-Secretary Deepak Shrestha, and Lumbini Cultural Municipality Acting Chief Kalpana Harijan.
